today seems was telling me about all the horrifying things that manisha learns from the telly. it really made me think about the impact the media has on young impressionable minds. we came to a conclusion that in the future, if we have kids we'd only let them watch commercial-less cartoons that have been screened by us. and no, that does not mean that they'd lead deprived childhoods haha.
some time ago when i was on the bus on my way to mrs lim's, this japanese girl boarded the bus with her domestic helper and sat across from me. She was totally cute (harumi i thought of you when i saw her haha) and after a while she got bored and rolled up her bus ticket, pretending it was a cigarette. I was momentarily stunned. I figured she might have picked it up from her parents, which in my opinion would have been completely irresponsible of them, or from movies. Don't get me started on smoking, i think it is a stupid, selfish and inconsiderate act.
But more significantly it made me uncertain about the world we live in. yeah, totally "in sooth i know not why i am so sad, it wearies me"-esque haha. a couple of years back my sunday school teacher said that he and his wife had no plans to have kids because they did not believe the world we live in is conducive for raising a child. I'm beginning to understand why, what with all our evolving social norms. Worst thing is there isnt much we can do about it, or can we?
we set out to change the world, but end up only changing ourselves.
